A Living History – 75+ Years of the Nottinghamshire Miners Welfare Ladies’ Sections
Whilst it is known for certain that ladies’ groups at miners’ welfares in Nottinghamshire were first officially established in 1949 it is understood that one or two groups had already been formed, the first we believe in Calverton in 1941.
At the outset, the primary aim of the Ladies Sections was to provide social and cultural activity for females connected to the mining industry. Now, almost 77 years later, the lives of women – in the former mining communities in particular – have changed considerably during this time as their opportunities have widened. Equally the meeting venues have had to alter. As the miners’ welfares have closed, alternative meeting places have been secured, and sections meet weekly or fortnightly across the county.
One of the most important and valuable aspects of the individual Ladies’ Sections is the fellowship it provides to individual members. Not only are members valued but they form firm friendships within the structure, across the county, and actively look forward to the next event on the calendar. The continuing success of meetings and activities relieve isolation and enhance well-being. In addition to welcoming guest speakers and conducting individual activities Sections join together for county functions and examples of these include County Ladies’ Day, yearly weekend breaks away, a Pie and Pea Bingo lunch, a 4-night holiday to Llandudno, Country and Western evening and Christmas carol services. Always conscious of those less fortunate the Ladies’ Sections continue to fund raise and step in where help is needed.
Ably led by Margaret Holmes, Secretary for over 50 years, this network of support and diverse ventures increases confidence and provides a stabilising influence in many towns and villages – helping to keep community spirits alive despite the devastating effects that the colliery closures caused and of course the unprecedented effects of the Global Pandemic. The activities, fellowship and mutual support provided by this organisation remains as important today as it always has been and the Ladies’ Sections are extremely grateful for the support of the Nottinghamshire Miners Welfare Trust Fund and the grants that they have generously awarded which have enabled the organisation to continue its work.
